From Pompeii to Winnipeg-
A Poet's Journey

WINNIPEG, CANADA -

To find oneself amid the tranquillity of the Prairies is to find the ideal opportunity to put one's thoughts into verse. So states Carmine Coppola, poet and author, originally from Pompeii, Italy, of his time in Winnipeg.

Fortunately, the serenity of his surroundings has allowed him to devote himself completely to his poetry. His first collection of poems, Poesie per Giulia (Poems for Julia) published in Winnipeg in 1996 by MIHC, told the tale of Julia, a metaphor for love as it was meant to be.

The book received very favourable reviews from many people in the arts and media, such as CBC Radio Arts Encounters and the Winnipeg Free Press.

Coppola was subsequently asked to speak at the National Italian Canadian Writer's Conference in Winnipeg and contributed his poetry to the Anthology of Italian Canadian Writing (ed. J. Pivato, Guernica Editions, Toronto, 1998).

The "Poet from Pompeii" recently completed a second work of poetry, again published by MIHC, Il tempo e le sue cose (The Many Facets of Time). Time is the common thread among this reflective collection of verse.

Time is something Coppola does not intend to waste. He has been hard at work on a small volume of philosophical essays and intends to soon complete a novel.

The Prairies have certainly given this poet and author the inspiration, and time, to write from the heart.
