Promoting Your Poetry - Tips and Ideas
Create stylish bookmarks (see ours on this website) to advertise your work and distribute them everywhere. Create business-style cards with a cover (colour, if possible) of the book on one side of the card and details of the book on the other side:
-Title
-Author (Translator, if applicable)
-Publisher
-ISBN
-Type of binding (Paper;Hardcover)
-Number of pages
-Contact Information (where to get the book)
Contact your local sources first: bookstores, local papers, radio and TV stations, and applicable associations and clubs. Offer to do readings to promote your writing. Invite everyone you know. Readings are a wonderful way to meet people and present your poetry.
Get involved in local writing associations to obtain other information on where to present your works, who to contact, etc.
Send out "mini-books" of your work. These are actually excerpts of your poetry. Choose about ten of your poems and create a mini-booklet using a software program like Publisher 98. Scan your book's cover to use as the cover of your "mini-book" and send it out to other media and literary sources as part of your media kit. The "mini-book" idea is great for writers who cannot afford to send out review copies of their books to everyone who requests a copy.
Prepare several formats for your PR material: brochures, pamphlets, press releases, "mini-books", business cards, bookmarks, etc. to spread the word about your work. Tailor the format to the audience. Be creative. Postcards are a great idea for poetry.
Contact the following sources with at least a press (and, if possible, excerpts of your books, bookmarks, brochures about you and your books):
-literary magazines
-poetry magazines/journals
-writers associations
-libraries
-bookstores in your area
-other stores featuring poetry books (gift stores, etc.)
-colleges and univeristies (writing departments)
Create as many "giveaway" items as possible. Make sure they include your contact information or ways to acquire your books. Items such as stickers, bookmarks, bookplates, magnetic business cards, postcards, etc. are only useful if people know where to get your books. Always include the ISBN!
